| Thallus orbicular or spreading over twigs, to 8 cm wide, usually smaller, flat on substratum. Lobes inflated, 1–3.5 mm wide, somewhat broader within thallus (2–4 mm), crowded, contiguous, placodioid, dichotomous, esorediate, marginal lobes usually suberect, rarely extended. Upper surface shining, smooth, pale grey, occasionally exposing black lower surface along margins. Medulla relatively thick, hollow, rarely slightly brown adjacent to lower cortex. Lower surface dull, strongly wrinkled, rarely with perforations at apices, black to brown-black, fading to pale brown or whitish at apices. Apothecia common, 1.5–10 mm wide, shortly pedicellate; base not swollen; disc entire, narrow, shining, concave, pale yellow-brown to red-brown, finally ±flat, dull, darker brown; thalline exciple slightly wrinkled, not involute. Ascospores 7–8.5 × 4–5.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla KC+ red, P-. Atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major); 3-hydroxyphysodic acid, 2'-O-methylphysodic acid (minor); alectoronic acid (trace). | ||
